Add Remote Service Monitor

Before monitoring can begin, you must install the Remote Service Monitor (RSM). The RSM can be installed on the same computer as the Portal but it must be installed on a computer that is located within the network where the systems you want to monitor are located. The RSM program monitors your elements and sends the monitoring data it collects back to the Portal.

To install the RSM program:

  1. Copy the RSM installation program to the target RSM computer.

    You can either download the RSM program via this link ( Download the RSM Program Now ) and save it to disk, or insert the BMC Performance Manager Portal CD/DVD. (Do not run the installation program from the link)

  2. Define DEP exception.

    If installing on Windows 2003 sp1 or later you must set exceptions for the Microsofts Data Execution Protection (DEP) feature. If the target computer does not support DEP, skip to step 3. To add the RSM executable to DEP select Start menu -> Control Panel -> System -> Advanced tab -> Settings button in the Performance section -> Data Execution Prevention tab. Click the Add button and use the file browser to select RemoteServiceMonitor.exe. Click OK to exit System Properties.

  3. If you downloaded the RSM, select the file saved to disk in step 1.

    If you are installing from DVD, the full path is <drive>:\BMCPortalKit\disk1\RSM\RemoteServiceMonitor.exe.

    If you are installing from CD, the full path is <drive>:\RSM\RemoteServiceMonitor.exe

  4. Run RemoteServ
